ON THE
EDGE
I
open my eyes and it’s a new day on the edge of death.
I
get out of bed and I take a deep breath.
I
have an appointment with death that will just have to wait.
I
have many things to do before my expiration date.
Time
is not my friend, it keeps running fast.
I
try to stay ahead, but I know I won’t last.
I
try to out run death but I know I can’t win.
I’ve
managed to keep a few steps ahead, but I know death will catch me in the end.
Is
there a heaven and is there a hell.
I’ll
never know here because only my dying will tell.
Believing
in a place no one has ever seen is a hard sell.
But
I think I’m already in a place called hell.
I
have an appetite for some things that I crave.
There
are things I want to do before spending eternity in a grave.
It
would be great to achieve immortality from the words that I write.
To
be able to come back and see this would be such a delight.
The
clock is tic, tic, ticking so I will try to have fun.
I
know when my time comes there will be so much left undone.
I
know when I’m gone there will be so much I will miss.
Like
the people I love and a special someone’s kiss.
The
past is gone forever and the future sits on my bow.
I
have my hopes and dreams but all I really have is now.
I
can’t go backwards as hard as I may try.
My
destination is forward and when I arrive I die.
I
started out slow and as time went by I picked up steam.
Time
begins to go faster and faster if you know what I mean.
Tick
tock, seconds turn into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into a day.
Tick
tock, tick tock, time keeps slipping away.
As
the sun goes down, I know I’ve taken on everything that’s come my way.
There’s
still so much left to do, there’s still so much left to say.
I
close my eyes knowing another night brings me closer to the ledge.
I
hope I can keep my balance through another night . . . walking on the edge.
