THESE OLD EYES

THESE OLD EYES

These old eyes have seen a simpler time when it was safe for a young boy to go out and play.
They've seen an innocence that believed everything that people had to say.
These old eyes have seen a time when people were so naïve.
They thought everything they heard or saw was true and it would be wrong to not believe.

These old eyes have seen a time when men were men and knew how to stand tall.
They saw a time when we believed that the bigger they are the harder they fall.
They saw a time, as men, there was a message we would send.
If you try to take what's mine, you will have to fight to the end.

These old eyes have seen a time when Rock 'n' Roll was king,
And the king of Rock 'n' Roll would shake his hips and sing.
I've seen a time when guys wore leather jackets and the girls wore their slacks.
The girls wore their ponytails and the guys had their hair slicked back.

These old eyes have seen black and white TV and you couldn't keep the good guy tied.
The good guys wore white hats and when they got shot, they never died.
I saw that there was good and bad and the good guys always won.
There were those that went after evil and didn't stop 'till their work was done.

These old eyes have seen a time before video games when kids went outside to play.
Kids had to use their imagination from sunup 'till the end of the day.
There were places to explore, lands to conquer, and treasures that were there to find.
There were rockets going into outer space and a cure for what ails man in a young boy's mind.

These old eyes have seen a time when it was all about a job well done.
A man gave a full day's work from the rise to the setting of the sun.
A man never settled for just going for the ride.
He always did the best he could because he had a thing called pride.

These old eyes have seen a man take the first steps on the moon.
Then I saw a man with a dream that was done too soon.
Then, don't ask what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
I saw oppression and then saw man set it free.

These old eyes now see a world where man is losing his soul.
Every man for himself now seems to be the goal.
I see what man is doing to man and can't help but wonder why.
When I see that man no longer cares, all these old eyes can do, are cry.

MY LIFE SO FAR

MY LIFE SO FAR

I flirted with death and it flirted back.
I flirted with hate and everything went black.
I flirted with life and it set me free.
I flirted with love, now I can see.

I've seen the darkness and I've touched the light.
I've turned the other cheek and I've joined the fight.
I've had my jobs and rested when I was done.
I've gazed at the moon and I've felt the sun.

I have my good times, I have my bad.
I have my laughter and sometimes feel sad.
I have my ups and I have my downs.
I've had my turn on the merry-go-round.

I've been to the mountain top and the valley down below.
I've been halfway around the world, but I still have places to go.
I've traveled slow and I've traveled fast.
I'm moving into the future but I still think about the past.

I've lived in the desert with the tumbleweeds and sand.
I've lived in the gulf where for the hurricanes you better have a plan.
I've lived in the jungle where there once was war, suffering, and pain.
I've lived on an island where the monsoon brings the rain.

I've been up north in blizzards of snow.
I've been down south, as far as I could go.
I've been to the east where I lived as a guest.
A few years later Uncle Sam called and I found myself in the west.

I've dug a few ditches and flipped a burger or two.
I've done my time at war and that's all true.
I've put up stock and I've tended bar.
I drove a cab and worked on a tug, so there you are.

I've played many games of love and always lost when it ends.
I hope the game will be different as this new love begins.
My kids and grandkids brighten my life like a shining star.
I know it's closer to the end than the time it began, but this is . . . my life so far.
