THE FIRST TIME

THE FIRST TIME

The first time I fall, don’t assume that I’m done.
Just because I’m not here, don’t think I’m on the run.
The first time I slip; don’t assume I’m going to fall.
Just because I have a number, doesn’t mean I’m going to call.

The first time I whisper in your ear, don’t add words that aren’t there.
Just because I look away, please don’t think that I don’t care.
The first time I blink; don’t think that I missed a thing.
Just because I know a song, doesn't mean that I’m going to sing.

The first time I look into someone’s eyes; don’t say that I’m in love.
Just because I hold someone in my arms, doesn’t mean that they fit like a glove.
The first time I speak of love; don’t think I’m going to elope.
Just because I’m under a spell, doesn’t mean I’m against the rope.

The first time you close your eyes, don’t think I’m gone.
Just because I’m accused, don’t assume I’ve done something wrong.
The first time I lose; don’t say I can’t be a winner.
Just because I do something bad, don’t see me as a sinner.

The first time I bleed; don’t have me six feet under.
Just because it rains, doesn’t always mean there will be thunder.
The first time you see my soul, you will know it can’t be owned.
Just because you own a house, doesn’t mean you have a home.

The first time I speak of God; don’t assume I’m going to pray.
Just because I’ve seen the light, doesn’t mean I’m going to see things your way.
The first time I speak of heaven; don’t assume I think that’s where you will go.
Just because you know his name, doesn’t mean you won’t have to reap what you sow.

The first time I hear the truth, don’t think all is forgiven.
Just because my soul is hurt, doesn’t mean I can’t go on livin’.
The first time that I forgive, don’t think that I am week.
Just because I bury the hatchet, don’t think there aren’t memories that I will keep.

The first time you see me talking to myself; don’t worry about what I’ve said.
Just because there’s no one there, doesn’t mean I can’t speak to the voices in my head.
The first time I speak of the end; don’t think I’m talking about death.
Just because I lose a battle, don’t count me out ‘till I’ve taken my last breath.

SOMEONE'S MOTHER

SOMEONE’S MOTHER
The writing is on the wall but can the mothers see what they say.
The signs all say beware there’s going to be another killing today.
She looks for answers for those that have gone awry.
All she can see is trouble through the tear in her eye.

The sun comes up and nothing has changed since the sun hit the dirt.
There’s always evil walking around looking for someone to hurt.
Just to feel tough some will hurt the first passerby.
When it’s all over, asking God why, someone’s mother will cry.

It’s been brother against brother since Cain and Able
It’s hard to change when you’re wearing a label.
Some think it’s expected to standup and defy.
When it’s all over, asking God why, someone’s mother will cry.

Some believe that to be a man you can never lose.
So if you do something to me I’ll do something to you.
Then to prove that you’re a man bullets start to fly.
When it’s all over, asking God why, someone’s mother will cry.

If you want to settle things just step off ten paces.
If you just start shooting there are innocent faces.
When bullets go into a crowd, women and children die.
When it’s all over, asking God why, someone’s mother will cry.

Uptown, downtown, Westbank, all the same sound,
There’s been a shooting and a young man is down.
He lays in the street a victim of the times and no one knows why.
When it’s all over, asking God why, someone’s mother will cry.

The writing is on the wall but can the mothers see what they say.
The signs all say beware there’s going to be another killing today.
She looks for answers for those that have gone awry.
All she can see is trouble through the tear in her eye.

TRUTH AND LIES

TRUTH AND LIES

I know there are things that need to be said.
I can hear the words but the truth seems to be dead.
Life as I know it keeps changing and everything is slipping away.
All I can do is close my eyes and dream of yesterday.

Reality is a chameleon that lives in an illusion of what is true.
You can no longer believe me and I can’t believe you.
To get green you must mix yellow and blue
When you mix the truth with lies you get a whole new hue.

Lies are just bandages to keep the truth from bleeding through.
Sometimes the truth can cut so deep there’s nothing you can do.
Lies can cover your wounds but will always leave a scar.
When life leaves you bleeding the truth is the best medicine by far.

Telling lies over time can leave you feeling hollow.
Hearing the truth sometimes can be very hard to swallow.
Sometimes lies are what are used to hide a scandal
Because for some the truth is hard to handle.
Lies are dirty aberrations buried under trash and debris.
The truth can be naked for the whole world to see.
Lies when savored can leave a bad taste
As the truth is stretched just to make a case.

Lies can shield you from the things in life that hurt.
The truth can be a weapon to serve a just dessert.
Sticking to a lie will keep you in chains for eternity.
When given the opportunity the truth will set you free.

Smoke and mirrors are made to deceive.
But what is smoke and what are mirrors and what can my eyes believe?
Sometimes lies hide in tall blades of the truth.
To find these lies you have to see the clues like a sleuth.

Lies come in many colors and live in every dimension.
There are many shades of the truth but only one will get you redemption.
Lies are like balloons under water, they will always float to the top.
When the truth picks up momentum, it can’t be stopped.
